A few years ago I was involved in kind of a freak car accident. You see a friend and I were on our way to her work. Just a normal day, normal traffic. Until a car cut us off, over correcting sent us spinning in rush hour traffic at 80 miles an hour.
It felt slow and quiet as we spun. Bam, we hit the wall and the car stopped.
Our hearts were racing and we felt the need to get out of the car, because it was a little smokey. As I opened the car door a women was screaming the car is on fire. We got in her car and looked back to a the car we got out of. It had just blown up. Fast and furious style. Straight out of a movie.
Yes, we were completely fine physically. Such a blessing.
Ever since riding in a car felt like torture. I was re-living this scenario in my mind over and over. My anxiety took over so much, I'd contemplated throwing myself out of the car.
I'd even made a commitment to myself I'd never buy another car. I'd ride a bike everywhere and grey hound it. Seriously, I did this.
But once I decided to have a family, that all seemed ridiculous and impossible. I deserved to figure out how to be okay in the car. How to manage my anxiety and free myself.
I now enjoy road trips and joy rides. However, I'm still working and still learning everyday.
How did I heal? One word: breath.
You see our breath lives in our spiritual zone. The zone that our emotions and feelings live in. I learned that when I was freaking out grabbing the "oh sh*t handle" that I was holding my breath. I was putting myself back in that moment of spinning. I figured out how to use breathing techniques in and out of the car to heal. I'd breathe and meditate. Imagine myself grounded in the car. Since then I've gotten my Breath Work Certification and blown my mind (instead of the car) with the power of the breath!
